Warning! This review is lengthy and detailed. I am a perfectionist. Continue reading if you are having trouble making a decision like I did!!! I chose to purchase this gate after very extensive research and consideration of several factors or safety hazards. The main factors were: 1.) stepping over a bottom bar of a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs, with or without a baby = trip hazard, 2.) stepping through a narrow 15-18" swing gate in the middle of a pressure mounted gate at the top of the stairs with or without a baby(especially going down) = difficult, unsafe, and inconvenient. 3.) if I don't need the gate closed all the time, or need the space to haul laundry baskets or furniture up/down the stairs, I can leave this gate open against the wall without taking it down or disassembling it like I would have to with a pressure mounted gate. The only downside to installing this North States easy swing gate is it's permanent until uninstalled. I've attached pictures of my final install.

Installation notes: Unfortunately, a wall stud was not located directly behind my install point on the hinge side of this gate. I had one of two options: 1.) install 2 cross braces horizontally between the two studs on each side of my hinge-install location using 1x3 or 1x4 lumber, painting it to match my wall color, and installing the hinges onto the cross braces, or 2.) drill holes in the drywall using a 5/16" drill bit to insert the plastic toggle anchors I have pictured(available at Menards) and using the matching screws that came with this gate instead of the screws supplied with the anchor package. I chose the latter of the two - use anchors! I'm glad I did. They are very supportive. Now, my mind might change over time depending on how much use this gate gets being opened and closed. However, I'm confident that there is no vertical/upward or downward forces that will compromise the strength of my install.

Installation advice: Like many other reviewers have stated, overall install of this gate is confusing if you try and follow the directions verbatim and/or are using the install template. My advice.....follow the instructions for measuring and adjusting the gate to fit your opening. Install the hinge side of the gate, first. Let it swing freely. Then, line up the 2 latch points by hand where they need to be positioned. The spindles on the latch side can be lengthened or shortened as needed. First, align only the top latch point housing by hand while holding it tightly with one hand, and closing the gate into it with your other hand(a bit challenging by yourself, so it's beneficial if you have a 2nd pair of hands). You may need to lengthen or shorten the spindles, depending on how much tension there is between the spindle and the latch. Use the screws provided to mark your holes in the latch housing once you find the best position and the gate latches smoothly. Drill a 1/8" hole for each mark, and install the top latch. Repeat these same steps for alignment and installation of the bottom latch. Ta-Da!!!

I have 3 huge complaints regarding this. First off, the gate itself is very sturdy. It is mostly metal and seems pretty solid. One problem with the device is the connectors that attach to the wall are made of plastic. Our child is only turning one, so this has only been in use for a few months. I find it hard to believe that these gates will last for more than 1 child. We have 2 gates and both plastic connectors on the wall are showing significant signs of wear and tear just from the gate being opened and closed. A second complaint also regarding the connectors, they contain small metal springs that are not fastened in there. After some time we already had one fall out. These gates are for children, so clearly they did not think through the possibility of small parts being a hazard. My last complaint, there are large bolts on the gate that can be extended to meet the size of your doorway. On numerous occasions I have been walking around, walked full speed into one of the bolts and came away with a nasty bruise. Yes, I'm clumsy, but so are small children.

When I came across these I was stoked about how well they matched the existing look of our deck and thought they'd be perfect for keeping the dogs from wondering off. We have openings on both sides of our deck so I bought two. The adjustable width made it work on both sides.

If you intend to use it for your deck just be sure to measure the height of the post it will be screwed to, to make sure it tall enough to accommodate the latch which sticks up several inches above the gate itself. You'll need 33-1/2" of flat surface. We had enough post height but the top part of the deck hung over the post so my husband had to notch the wood out. (see picture for what I mean) It was worth doing for us even though it's not the best look.

The color is more black than bronze which worked in our favor. No spray painting was required. The gate can be set up to swing out or in. Since we don't have little children we set it up to swing out towards the steps since that works better for us when letting the dogs go down into the yard.

It took my husband less than an hour to install both gates but that's because he doesn't believe in reading (or asking) directions for some reason. It probably would have taken him less time but I stopped trying to convince him about the whole following directions thing years ago.

They haven't been installed outside long enough to judge how well they hold up to the weather but I will update this post down the road for that. They are metal with some plastic parts (latch, brackets, etc) so they should do just fine, after all the balusters on our deck are made of the same tubular metal and they don't rust so I'm hopeful. As an added tip, my husband used stainless steel screws instead of the ones that came with the gate to keep them from rusting then breaking.

Bottom line is these are ideal for keeping the dogs on the deck.

UPDATE: 2 years since outdoor installation and there is zero rust. These have been great!!!
UDATE #2: 3-1/2 years...no rust...
